TOKENS & TOKENIZING

TOKEN is universal data container for storing all necessary information for production both S-57 and S-101 from the one single source.

The TOKENIZING is the procedure of conversion S-57 ENC into tokens data set for subsequent S-57 and S-101 ENC production by means of AI and automatic procedures.

TOKENS are presented via S-100 universal data model and stored in open XML format. TOKENS being managed via file OS file system, doesn’t require Database SW and for that reason is inexpensive and easy to work.

TOKENS operation is performed by dKart TOKENIZER SW.

AUTOMATION

dKart Evolution core of automation is based on few components what makes data production and maintenance cost effective and sustainable.

  • All SW components can be launched in automatic mode for processing individual ENC and data packages.
  • System implies text automatic text recognition for making automatically ENC updates on its basis.
  • System anticipates bathymetric and terrestrial survey data automatic processing.

SW reports, tasks and events being circulated via dKart Patrol management system allowing manual or automatic management.

QC & S-57/S-101 INTEGRITY VALIDATION

To perform integrity checks between S-57 and S-101 portfolio dKart Evolution anticipates dedicated SW for performing any types of data cross checks to detect ENC discrepancies and missing data critical for navigational safety.

This task is performed by dKart VS tool.

LEARNING & SUPPORT

One of the key directions of our strategy is to assist our clients in learning international standards, conduct regular training on the use of dKart tools, and provide prompt response to emerging problems. For this purpose, we are developing remote tools based on our website:
where our clients can find answers to many of their questions. Information is provided in the form of articles and presentations, most of which are translated using AI into national languages to facilitate cartographers' understanding of complex technical issues. Many documents are available as animated presentations and podcasts.

We would like to draw special attention to the informational reference systems on standards 57 and 101. The first one, as part of dKart Office, has long been and deservedly popular in the hydrographic professional community; the second one, https://dKart-GURU.dkart.fi
was recently created with the help of AI and is dedicated to both standards S-57 and S-101 and their comparison.

MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Another important component of our technology is the production management system dKart WEB Patrol, which provides constant monitoring of production processes, delivers reports on the results of software module operations, allows task monitoring and management, and enables task assignment among cartographers.
The system is built on cloud technologies and information exchange via the internet. For some of our clients, such a solution is not always considered secure; for these cases, we provide for its deployment within the client's office.

Data & SW

There are three main SW components working in manual and automatic mode by means of SW utility Program Manager:

  • Tokenizer SW. This program is designed as universal data transformer using S-100 model and conversion rules presented in the open XML format;
  • S-57 Editor SW. To be used as editing and validation tool for S-57 compilation and maintenance;
  • S-101 Editor SW. The same as above only with respect to S-101 ENC and S-157 Tokens;

And three main data storage/folders like following:

  • Source S-57 ENC;
  • S-157 Token Sets;
  • Source Data;

In addition, few SW aux programs and utilities are used where the most important one is Patrol Watch Dog SW. dKart Patrol WEB database is placed in dKart Cloud but optionally can be located on customer’s server inside office.
dKart Evolution data and SW infrastructure looks as presented on the diagram bellow.

TOKENIZING S-57 to S-101

The process comprises of the following steps and procedures:

  • S-57 ENC validation and preparation in accordance with S-101 requirements. Standard S-158;
  • Conversion from S-57 to Tokens;
  • Tokens validation and amending necessary S-101 data;
  • Final S-101 conversion ENC from Tokens;
  • Final S-101 QC and validation.

Because S-101 format is more than 95% identical to S-57 the idea of using S-57 ENC as main source for producing S-101 data looks practical. At the same time, despite the above the different requirements applied to the same data within S-58 and S-158 validation standards.
To simplify data preparation and conversion and to allow cartographers performing those operations in familiar workspace we combine S-58 and S-158 checks referring to identical information within S-57 and S-101 ENC.
That requirements we have added to S-57 Inspector and Editor SW under title of S-101 Compliance tests. To automate the procedure dKart Editor can be launched package mode processing bunch of S-57 automatically without cartographers’ intervention. The important thing is dKart S-57 has an option for automatic bugs fixing some problems where it looks reasonable.

S-57 ENC VALIDATION

The very first step is S-57 ENCs placement in the Source S-57 ENC Data Folder. Upon that the corresponding Event and Report will be automatically generated by dKart WEB Patrol.
Based on above the next action is start of dKart S-57 Editor for QC and Validation in automatic mode.
It will result in QC Reports appearing on Patrol WEB Console. Bugs to be assigned to individual cartographers for correction and iterating the procedure all over again till the moment source S-57 ENC are treated as satisfactory for performing farther step which is Tokenizer conversion.
The result of Tokenizer work is new data in the TOKEN SET folder with corresponding alarm triggered by dKart WEB Patrol.
The next step is Tokens validation by dKart S-101 Editor.
After Tokens QC and Validation is OK, the same procedure to applied to final S-101 ENC. The last final step is getting final S-101 ENC from token with QC and Validation by S-101 Editor, however in case all other steps went well this procedure is just formal thing.

UPDATING & MAINTENANCE

There are two ways of performing updating and maintenance - automatic and manual. In first scenario dKart Delta SW to be users. The procedure looks like it is presented on diagram below.
After source information is placed in Source Folder it is acknowledged via Patrol WEB with assigning a corresponding task to dKart Delta cartographer. After selecting the source data all operations performed automatically with generating updating for tokens, S-57 and S-101 ENCs and report to dKart WEB patrol.
Alternatively updating can be produced via manual operations be means of dKart S-101 Editor with results as above
