dKart Evolution is cost effective

dKart Evolution is a cost effective solution because it is based on critical S-100 analyses which proves that S-101 is 90% similar to S-57.

Thus, there is no sense in fully transitioning to S-101 production, since Hydrographic Offices (HOs) already possess more than 90% of this data. The S-101 standard simply renamed and reshuffled it.

Considering that ENC production, besides requiring software tools, also requires professional cartographers who know and understand the format, know the encoding rules, and know the verification and testing rules, retraining and switching to producing the same data, only in a different form, under different encoding and testing rules, appears absolutely meaningless and very expensive. This is especially true since, simultaneously with S-101, it will also be necessary to maintain and support ENC production in the S-57 format.

dKart Evolution, as the name implies, offers a rational, economical, and gradual transition from producing ENCs only in S-57 format to producing both S-57 and S-101 simultaneously.

This approach maximally preserves the technical and professional capital of the HO, reliable technological cycles, long-term investments, accumulated experience, and the qualifications of cartographers in the field of producing and maintaining up-to-date ENCs in the S-57 format.

dKart Evolution is based on one main principle. Due to the fact that S-57 and S-101 coincide by 90%, data preparation for both formats can be 90% performed in the S-57 format. We will not go into technical details here, we will only say that to implement this idea, we unified data description using tokens and harmonized the requirements of the S-58 and S-158 standards where they do not contradict each other. This allowed using existing tools for working with the S-57 format to perform 90% of all work necessary for preparing ENCs in the S-101 format. For the remaining 10%, we offer special tools that do not duplicate the aforementioned 90% of the functionality and are therefore economically acceptable.

Let's illustrate this graphically. The first diagram presents a cost estimate for the case of parallel production, which includes additional costs for S-101 production and also includes costs for maintaining collection equivalence. The total is 220%, i.e., an increase in production costs of more than double.
In the case of dKart Evolution, the total costs include additional resources for producing S-57 according to new S-101 requirements (10%), resources for complying with specific S-101 requirements (10%), and costs for maintaining collection equivalence (20%), totaling 140%, i.e., significantly less than with parallel production.
Furthermore, considering the automation of token processing, the total costs for data production in the S-57 environment can be reduced by at least half, resulting in a final estimate of 80%, i.e., more than three times more economical compared to a direct transition to S-101.

Thus, recognizing the simple fact of the semantic equivalence of the S-57 and S-101 standards allows us to offer the most efficient solution, dKart Evolution. Both in terms of costs and in terms of managing additional risks.
