In 2024, the maritime industry made significant progress in the fight against climate change. According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from international shipping decreased by 10% compared to the previous year.
This was the result of new standards for energy efficiency and the use of more environmentally friendly fuels.
Measures aimed at improving ship energy efficiency include upgrading existing vessels and implementing innovative technologies such as wind and solar installations, and also experiments with hydrogen fuel. These changes are expected to help maritime transport significantly reduce its carbon footprint in the coming years.
Experts believe this step is an important milestone on the path to achieving carbon neutrality in the maritime sector by 2050.
